Alright, here's the scenario. When shooting basketball, I use 2 Nikon sb-600's off camera in the corner of the gym. Works like a charm. But I can only shoot manual right now with radio triggers which doesn't work well because the light to subject distance is rapidly changing. So one shot will be underexposed, then one will be properly exposed, the next is washed out. Where as if I could get TTL functionality, I'd have 3 properly exposed shots and alot more keepers.

So I'm looking into picking up an SU-800 commander (My D80's pop up flash won't reach the flashes as they are behind me). I don't think the SU-800 would trigger them reliably either, because they'd be behind me and about 30-40 feet to my side. If someone made a pivoting hotshoe extension that could aim the su-800 backwards, it would be perfect. As I stand now, I could throw it on a flash bracket with a ttl cord, but I'd like to eliminate the cord and bracket if possible. Any ideas?

Wouldn't the arm move with you and the camera as you move though, and wouldn't that mean that it's aim is not necessarily going to always be looking at the flash you want it to control? I don't know what the FOV is for the thing, but it came to mind. I suspect that a bracket and cord is really going to be the thing to go with, if you can't afford TTL radio triggers, which is ultimately the best solution for you.

TTL capable pocket wizards would be your best bet!... I don't know that the SU-800 will be adequate for really fast action, by itself... and yes.. you will have issues with the IR (strictly line of sight!)
