Playing with DOF

The cat was in a good place to play with DOF a little bit. Just wondering what one of these two work best. Both were taken with my 50mm lens. First one was around a f8, and second one was closer to f3. (sorry I don't remember exact settings.

Both of these images work the same to me. Not a whole lot of difference. The first one has an obvious longer depth of field, but not long enough to sharpen the foreground, as well as the subject. The foreground is still soft emphasizing just the subject. The second is doing pretty much the same thing but softening the foreground a little more. Really, just the background is showing most of the change. Would probably be better off with attempting the first shot at f22 which would have focus the entire scene.
