Playing with Lighting

Still learning my lighting techniques, so I played for a bit tonight. Couple of mistakes I did, I didn't need my ISO so high, and had +1.5 compensation. (wasn't needed as I shot all manual) How does the lighting look? Flash was camera left with some natural light coming in from the right. Also had reflector on camera right. (first image only) Second shot I had a flash behind him just to try out, but no reflector on that one.

If you are learning lighting techniques you should check with a free book or PDF file online that illustrates good lighting techniques then try to duplicate the setup. Personally I think your lighting should be a little more subtle. The spotlight on the back of the kids head has blown out his hair around the edges and at the same time the front is too underlit in places.
