Why do you think paralegal is still a growing profession? We're a lot cheaper than lawyers. Of course, I'm not allowed to give legal advice, so this might not be my wisest business plan

Thank you! :sillysmi: I'm glad that I've finished it, though it's going to be strange to not have a class next semester. I might audit a few more classes just for personal reasons. The classes offered in the Fall are ones I've either taken or am not interested in at all, but in the Spring, I might sit in on the Real Estate class so I can help sell my mother's house.

Or, since I have free tuition, I might just start taking random classes just for the hell of it! I was also considering taking Spanish so I could make myself more marketable to, for example, immigration law firms.

Ironically, I did criminal defence for my placement both years. I *swore* it was the one area of law I wasn't going to do. But I LOVED it. I worked for a really awesome husband and wife team and had some really awesome experiences (especially when I realized one of our clients was my ex). My only issue is that when he asked me to work on a case and gather evidence, I inevitably found stuff to make our client look guilty. Whoops. But I did create their entire precedent system which I was darn proud of. I then did some corporate law. I ended up working for the government for the 4 best lawyers in the world. :heart: I love those 4 and am still very close to them. It was for OHIP (Ontario health insurance plan) so appeals, physician fraud, government lawsuits ect. I miss it.

Criminal is what I'm most interested in, though I'd much rather be in prosecution. Unfortunately, the DA in this county doesn't hire paralegals. There are two other counties close enough that I might consider contacting, though. And I've seen ads for paralegals at the Manhattan DA. I'm close enough to commute, but honestly, it would be a long one - not really because of distance, but logistics and timing - and possibly more expensive than the job would be worth.

So I've come to terms with working for a defense firm mostly because I'd rather do that than work in real estate or personal injury, or something like that.

I'm also on a waiting list for the civil service exam that would allow me to apply to the state criminal justice department as a paralegal. That might take a while, though, so I have to find something else in the meantime. But if a state job comes up and I actually get it, I'd most likely drop the other job like a hot potato

I wanted prosecution too, but there was nothing available. The lawyers I worked for had bad experiences with previous placement students and hadn't taken anyone on in a few years. I have no idea why they took me on, but my suspicion is one of my teachers talked to them. I have to say, as much as I didn't want to do it, I learned so much and ended up enjoying it immensely.

I *hated* real estate. Way too much just sitting behind the computer or researching titles. Zero interest. Working for the state criminal justice department would be so cool. Keeping my fingers crossed for you for the state job!!

In 2012, after teaching at my college for 20 semesters, I was "promoted" to Senior Adjunct. One of the very very...very...few perks of that status is free tuition, and so I started training for a second career by enrolling in a paralegal certificate program. I had to do it part time because I had to keep teaching, not only for an income but also to keep that free tuition benefit. (For the record, I trained for a second career because I can't afford my first one anymore.)

As of last week, I am finished with the program.

As of today, after getting the grade for my last class, I can say that I graduated with a 4.0. :geek:


So...kinda proud of myself :blushing:

Oh and by the way, is anyone here a lawyer in the NY Tri-state area and if you are, do you need a paralegal??? :mrgreen:

Thanks, Barb! I'm going to visit some local courts later this month - I know an attorney who works there and she's going to introduce me around. I'll try to get the scoop on the best way to get into the courts, or at least maybe find the names of decent law firms to apply to in the area. I'm not so sure how good I am at networking, but for my first job, I think it's going to be really important. I know being able to drop the name of someone in the DA's office helped me get my internship, so I'm sure somehow a connection I make is going to help me with the first job. Just gotta get the right connection!
