Please explain "bokeh" to me....

I dont have the time p!nk

Im not sure if I like the subject with this bokeh. I wish you were shotting something else. The bokeh is awesome. It looks like stacked wood logs.

I took some without the "subject" but I felt they were weak. If I get some time, I will post one or two up.

I like it. The subject almost fits the kind of swirl in the bokeh. The bokeh does look awesome. I wish there was "more" subject I guess, but I really like the shot.

This is very interesting, almost mezmorizing!

You have to squeeze them to the appropriate shape.

lol, subject reminds me of what a 'feminine' male Captain Hook would have :lmao:

Why does each blurred specular highlight have dark concentric circles in it?

Onion bokeh.

Take a look...here you can see photos of classic onion bokeh, and also cat's eye bokeh.

Sigma and Canon 50mm f/1.4 bokeh samples - FM Forums

At first the thread title was a bit sarcastic, now I see it has meaning. I was under the assumption that the dark lines in the BSH (blurred specular highlight ;)) was from the incandescent christmas lights I was using, or at least from the shape of them. So I did a little test just now with a side by side comparison with incandescent and LED lights... results, different color, same circles. I put my 50mm 1.8 on, I got the hexagonal shaped BSH but no onion-ing.

Now, I do not mind the onion BSH. It seems to be a matter of taste (pun intended I guess). But I must ask, what causes this? My best uneducated guess would be the multiple focal range of the lens (17-55mm) something to do with the internals of the lens since the 50mm prime did not produce it.

Thanks for the comments.
