Please help chose a camera

Personally I would say Canon, since its the first professional camera I have used, and bought. Nikons are also good cameras too. If the Nikon is cheaper for you, then let that one be the first one you'll buy.

I personally own a D3200 but I have a friend who owns a D5100. And as comparing beings we all are, I compared her D5100 to my D3200. Hahah.

Despite the downside of a lower megapixel in the D5100, it serves well with an affordable price tag and the amazing vari-angle. I could easily get nice angles especially from above or below which my D3200 would be difficult as it was be hard for me to see. I still prefer my D3200 though as in my opinion I feel it is more 'home' to me. The D5100 is a nice entry level with cool features and all. The D5200 might be a better option, that is when the price tag goes down a little. hahah.

You said that you would use the camera for taking pictures of your kids mostly. I think you can choose a Canon 550D and it is not expensive.

I am also looking for a dslr to take pics of my kiddos! I played for a couple minutes with a D3100 at Shutterbug, but couldn't get too into it because my 6 month old was not having fun and my 3 year old was bored. So I thought I'd for sure get that, then my husband steps in and tells me that if I did my research I'd find a Canon would be better because of the infinite lens options. *sigh* Okay, but really for what I'm going to be shooting (my kids) do I need all those? BUt then the auto focus thing with the Nikon and the more expensive lens... my head is going to explode!

If all you want is taking pics of you kiddos, ANY modern DSLR is more than enough. More than that - you do not even need a DSLR. Modern mirrorless cameras that are more compact and can be carried in your bag will do this job just as well. Look at the best Sony, Fuji, Olympus mirrorless systems - many pros are using them as their primary tools these days. They are not cheap, but have a huge advantage: you will make more photos. How often are you going to carry a bulky DSLR with you when going out with your kids?
Anyway, you only need to select carefully if you know it is going to be your serious hobby. Then you need to decide which system to join - Nikon, Canon, Sony or whatever else. And the reason for that is - you first DSLR camera will be just a small fraction of your future expenses.
From what you are saying, I guess this is not the case. So you can safely ignore your husband's advice, go to the shop, try different cameras, choose one or two that you like, read reviews to confirm that the camera is OK, find a great deal and you are sorted.
