What's new

Poor member response and awful moderation.

Ok.

Well that all gives me more to work with than the previous "Buy this" advice I had.

Thanks

Where did you get the advice? (Bedfords?)

From somebody who understands cameras more than I do. Obviously they understand why the larger bodies are priced the way they are... he did mention top quality.. but his advice was limited to those. The broader range of cameras, prices and differences between frames is helpful.

Just making sure that the local camera shop wasn't just trying to upsell you. You'll end up wanting the high end cameras and may need them at some point but there are plenty of people that use the mid-price cameras with great results. As mentioned, it's all depends on the budget for the items.

Instead of a more basic camera like a Rebel what about buying used? I've done well at local camera swaps and purchasing online from businesses like KEH - I've found them to be very reputable and accurate on their ratings etc. If you buy from a reputable used seller you might be able to afford something that gives you more options than a base model camera. I'm not sure what your schooling will require but that price range seems high if you're just starting out.

(And I skipped ahead on this thread... haven't been on the board all that long but these type threads have already made me wonder about how things are handled on this site. I've gotten the impression myself that sometimes the moderation isn't adequate or the standards are such that people seem to be allowed to get carried away in going after an OP - and if an OP posts something in what may not be the most appropriate way, some guidance could be given in a more respectful way than I see on here at times.)

I have no point of reference for past issues... as for this one, I contributed to the heated posts plenty myself. I'm quick to engage and slow to cool down.

In all fairness, the moderators were the most respectful and sincere people to speak to me.. much more fair than I was being.

moderation is limited. they try not to have to step in on every thread that goes a little awry. Thats when people start complaining of TOO MUCH moderation where people cant speak their mind. theres just no pleasing everyone. typically a thread will get locked when there is a warning by a mod issued and subsequently ignored. overall it was felt that giving more leeway was better than locking threads for every little bit of flaming. you also have to take into consideration the way someone deals with those negative remarks. do they start flaming back? or do they simply use the report button that people tend to forget about? Fuel on the fire, so to speak.

Ah I see.. no he's not a dealer. But he was obviously limited in his advice.

He was just avoiding some steps is all. Trying to put you in the good stuff first.

I'd agree somewhat with Rocketman. The glass makes the difference. I will say this, I bought the T3i almost a year ago and I have spent the last 3-4 months wishing I would have gotten the 7D. You could get it and pair it with some good glass and be in that $3,000 total range and I think you'd be set up for a while.
I agree with you Ron, in retrospect I also wish I had gone with something other than entry-level body but not knowing whether the hobby would stick or not I went the safe route. Could'a, would'a, should'a. I plan on an upgrade in the not too distant future but for some, the T3i is a great start/end. For instance my friends jumped into the T4i when I got my T3i, after much discussion I still can't get them out of auto, in which case the T4i is all they'll ever need, lol.

Well I still don't know a lot about photography and it's equipment... but I assume it's a matter of how efficient the use of tools is ... like any tool in any profession.

Good to have different perspectives though. I'm well versed in tools of my trade... and I understand that even the simplest can work well... but that's because I understand them.

It'll be smoother for me the more I understand cameras.

If you can get some time, go out to Baker Photo & Video in Yukon. They will spend time with you talking about the different options and try to help fill your needs. They have helped me to understand a lot this last year.

I'll do that. Thank you.

I start a conversation on an angry rant and end up watching it turn into a Fluff convo based on rear-end collisions in porn... my grandma was right.. I'm goin to Hell...

Welcome to TPF!!! We ain't so bad...lol (this was the middle of the day...catch a thread after dark...:sexywink:)

My feedback..

You can't ask a question on this forum without getting sarcastic bull**** thrown at you.

My suggestion..

Don't piss off people who have enough influence with 126 other forums across 3 countries and 47 industries and fields to discredit the moderation you exhibit in this forum.

Word of mouth is the most powerful advertising concept in business and your forum has some big mouths and lowsy moderators.

Enjoy the fun to come! :-)

That is how it is online. You got to take all comers...good and bad.

Don't like it?

Develop thick skin or hire a consultant.

Honestly, I am VERY surprised that one of the moderators has not swooped in and moderated all of your posts that carry the "Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2" tags, and then listed the reason for moderating as "removing undesired phone spam". Seriously. I have seen that retentive behavior over and over and over here. Removing all such tags is a great way to deny the entire membership the knowledge that people making short posts,or very brief replies, are on mobile devices, and thus cannot easily make lengthy posts nor lengthy responses, nor can they actually SEE much detail in any posted images, etc.. Yeah...very surprised you have not been modded for that horrible offense.

The humor around here is not for everyone, but you cant deny we have some great teachers if you can get through the hazing process =)
