What's new

Popular Photography's photo of the day.

Nice shot! Keep in mind, Any of Pop Photo's contests, or whatever that require you to send them a photo are rights grabs. They can now use that photo however they want without your permission.

Still a nice photo. :)

A small price to pay, IMHO, for the flattery of being published :)
It has the potential to be a huge price. Pop Photo could make 10's of thousands of $$$'s from that photo, none of which would go to the photographer. I've not read Pop Photos contest rules.

In the US copyright is good for the life of the photographer, + 70 years. That gives a fine art image a lot of time to potentially generate $$$'s.

I went to the Popular Photography web site.

When I click on Contest 'Official Rules' it takes me to their 'What's New' page, not the 'official rules'.

Also 'photo of the day' is not shown as one of their contests, so who knows what terms/conditions apply, or where they get the 'Photo of the day' from?
Are they tied directly into Flickr?

Yeah, it's through FlickR. I saw on Pop Photo's Facebook page that they had a "photo of the day" pool on FlickR so I uploaded some stuff.

Here's the pool:

I
'll admit I haven't read the rules...

Flickr: Help: Groups

Can I create a group for my company?

Commercial use of groups is generally not allowed on Flickr as outlined in the Community Guidelines. The only way a company can run a group is if they work with us on an official Sponsored Group. If you're interested in advertising or learning more about our paid sponsorship program, please contact our Business Development team.

The way they have it set up makes it very hard to figure out what's what.

Suffice to say that at the least Popular Photography used your photo to help promote their web site and magazine for a day. All you got out of the deal is a credit.

When you get a chance, check out how much Popular Photography charges to advertise in their magazine, and on their web site.
