I think that it falls a little short of 'portrait'; certainly a family candid worth keeping for the memories, but not quite there as far as 'portrait' goes. Consider shooting in portrait aspect, and getting down to the subject's eye level. As well, don't be afraid to use a little fill-flash to brighten up the shot.
