Portrait for Feedback

The negative space really adds nothing to the portrait and actually distracts in the way of leaving people wondering why there is dead space vs focusing on the person.

I cropped mine in too tight I think, and left some funky background goo near his ear/hair. lol, oh well. guess I was in a hurry.

Very cute.. Personally, I like the landscape orientation and the negative space.. Why do all portraits have to be in portrait orientation? I say, mix it up!!

Well, sometimes it works. 99.9% of the time it doesn't. I don't think anyone is saying it's wrong, as much as their opinions would be that it would serve better not in landscape. being different for the sake of being different does not make a good photograph unless it adds something. Personally, I just don't see where it "adds" to the photo.

It would not been too bad if his head wasn't cut off. Still too much space for my liking, however it could have been pulled off more than having the head chopped. Most folks who do it don't even realize it until post. Then it's too late. Had they shot in portrait mode, it would not have happened in the first place, which is reason number two to do it that way. ;-)

To all you posters suggesting vertical camera orientation so as not to cut the top off of a subject's head...that's MY GIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, back off!

Funny you seldom see that (horizontal portraits) on Pro sites... (not talking FB Pros.. they don't count!) When a Pro does do it.. there is a reason for it (not "I forgot to flip my camera"!) Maybe there is a reason that many people with LOTS of experience advocate using portrait orientation unless there is a specific reason to use landscape???

Thank you everyone! Here is what I have taken from this... Get my reflectors out of the truck before my husband leaves for work and try it again with portrait orientation. This will lighten, but not get rid of, the shadows on camera right. And I won't chop off his cute little head. I'll post the results in another thread.
