Portraits were never my thing but do I have the right idea? C&C much appreciated, thanks.

Your white balance seems to be off, creating a yellowish/greenish tint that is hideous. That needs to be fixed before any imput on other issues.

Be sure you have your subject(s) clear out all the boogers, before you shoot up their nostrils.

Be careful with camera perspective, shallow DOF, and white balance.

Portraits are more engaging if the subject make eye contact with the camera lens. Shots of people looking away from the camera are more often called candids, rather than portraits. The same goes for informal set-ups, whhich are often termed 'street' photography.

Eyes are the 'window to the soul' and are more appealling if they are not in shadow.

With that last pic that i'm assuming you're referring to I felt the color tint was necessary to intensify the hideous subject, it also makes him look like the joker. So these wouldn't be called portraits but candids?

I did not say hideous subject, I said the greenish tint was hideous. It gives your subject jaundice looking skin and hair. With the exception of your second image all have this white balance issue. If this was intentional by you then forgive me I thought you may have wanted C&C.
