An experimental shot. I guess you can see what I was tying to achieve, I will try this shot again at some stage, but are there any ways I can stop that flaring of the sun?

My own suggestion would be to use the tiniest of apertures (but that will ask for a tripod with the light you will have at the time). You will still see rays, but they will look less "blotchy".
