Practicing on backlighting

I think I should have taken this earlier in the day. No Flash used. Do you think flash would have helped? Charlie you can always work your magic editing - Jackie will be very exited

Nicely done; a little fill-flash woudn't have gone amiss as it would have added some sparkle to the eyes.

I don't think a flash would have made it better. It's nice the way it is. I'd almost like to see a bit more rear light. I see some catchlights in her eyes, but maybe you could dodge them a bit in post to make them really pop.

Yep! Her eye sockets are dark. Not quite 'raccoon eyes'.

The eyes are pretty important in a portrait and hers being so dark eliminates a lot of her human-ness.

how would you have lit this - and where would you have the light coming from?

Her skin tone is quite pale compared to the nice warm backlight you were getting. You could add a 1/4 CTO gel to your flash head to warm her face up a little. Alternatively, I have two Lastolite reflector covers that are banded with gold and silver (one having a broader gold band) which would do so similarly.

Thank you Kundalini. I haven't done any PP to the image. I wanted opinions so I could get it right in camera as opposed to doing heavy PP

I would have used off camera left and possibly a reflector off camera right to add more fill.
