I just ran a quick test. I took a shot of my eyes really close and saved one as a tiff and the other as a max quality jpeg. I can opened them side by side and they look identical to me. That puts it to rest for me. The only reason I see to keep a tiff version is for ongoing changes.

TIFFs can also be used when you are saving a layered image in Photoshop. In other words, you can save an image in Photoshop, will any/all layers intact, then come back to it later and use those layers. You could also use the Photoshop format (PSD), but some people like TIFF because it's more universal.

With a JPEG, you can't save the layers.
