I bookmarked the lighting kit, but I'm thinking about building a light box, to place the subject

PVC tubing. Backdrop paper, & velum paper.

To go even cheaper, a sheet of backdrop paper draped on an armless chair.

DIY is the way to go. I built a light booth out of old wooden easels and some vellum paper, some screws and a few clamps. total cost= .99¢ for the clamp, which I always get whenever I am at Lowes just to have extra.
I also made my own softbox out of matte board, tape, a mount from a smaller softbox and some vellum:
