Profile shot.

I'm new to photography as well. To me, the background is distracting. And the sun spot on his face. But that's just me. :)
 
Yes, the background is the biggest problem in this photo, IMO. It's distracting and frankly I'm more interested in the stuff back there than the subject.

You need to look at some guidelines for shooting portraits on the net or in books. The background is too distracting. You should have reduced depth of field by shooting at F 2.8 or example or using a fast telephoto lens. The side lighting cuts up his face from his eyebrow through the edge of his eye and across under it. It is also too bright and contrasts with his skin colouring. The brightness "mixture" in the background tending to over-exposure is also a problem.
