Question about eyes & Rule of Thirds

When people talk about eyes needing to be on one of the 4 "hot spots", does that mean BOTH eyes evened around it, or should one eye be centered on that point, and the other off-center? Does it even matter, as long as one of the eyes is close to it (assuming it's not strictly a profile shot)? Thanks for the clarification!

There really aren't any hard/fast rules...but I'd say that you'd probably want the closer eye to be the focal point of the portrait. So if you are trying to adhere to the 'rule of thirds', that is what you would try to place on one of the hot spots.
