question about how to use lens for portrait.

I know this is a very newbie question, but I have a canon Rebel and the lens I used was the EF 50mm f1.8. I wanted to get portrait of me and my family. I used my tripod. I wanted to get pic of us walking toward camera and we came out blurry? what is best setting to get this right? and also some of the other pics the background was clear and we were blurry. I did take some pics of my 2 daughters and they came out great! so was it because we were too close to camera or too far??? any advice would be greatly appreciated. I do prefer to take outdoor shots. so probably more practice and figuring out the settings through my mistakes?? thanks
