Question about my Nikkon D40 SLR.

I just rencently went out with a friend shooting pictures, and he was excited for me that I got a SLR cause i had a point annd shoot for the longest time.

Anyway, he let me borrow some lenses cause I just have a 50mm. when I looked through the eye peice everything was blurry no matter the zoom, and even when I took the shot - it still was blurry. My friend only messes with Nikkons.

Any reason??

My guess is the lens was set to manual focus and you were trying to auto focus.

Your D40 does not have an auto focus motor in the camera body like the much less compact Nikon's do, but most (though not all) current Nikon lenses have a auto focus motor in the lens.

Those lenses that have an auto focus motor are designated AF-S or AF-I, but as mentioned usually have an Auto/Manual focus switch on them. If your friends lenses only say AF in their title, they don't have an auto focus motor in them and you would have to be manually turn the focus ring to focus when used on your D40.

So to really help you, we need to know more about the lenses in question. Does your 50 mm lens auto focus on your D40? I wonder if the lens you have is actually an AF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6?
