I have a 60' and 36" Photek Umbrella Softlighter II with 2 x 500 Elinchrom strobes. I wanted to know if I can shoot with these bare as in without a 90 degree umbrella reflector.

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question. I've never used them before and I am afraid that if I shoot bare, it may cause a fire.

Are you talking about the reflector that goes on the center of the umbrella? that helps spread and bounce back the light? If that is what you are talking about and your light is a strobe, really do not see any big issue.

Hi Joe, Im taking about this reflector:

EL 26143 Elinchrom Reflector 16 cm 90°.

The strobe basically has to be inserted inside the Softlighter through this sock-like opening.

SL6000S Photek Softlighter 60" with a 7mm Shaft

Im afraid that there is some contact between the softlighter and the bulb, that I may not be seeing. Im thinking the reflector above would ensure that, but since I am all new at this, I may just be being overly careful. Thanks for your help.

I use mine and leave it on there , I would think it would be more dangerous not to use it as it keeps the cloth etc. from direct contact and is way cooler. Keep in mind it is a strobe and not continuos light so the light is not that hot with a model light on.
