I have a nikon d70 and a 28-90mm f/3.5-5.6 and im interesred in shooting portraits. What should i be looking for a 50mm or one of nikon's speedlights or something else? What are your recommendations? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's your budget? There's no replacement for good glass. I love my 70-200vr not that you can't do ok with what you have.

50mm 1.8 if you are on a tight budget, extra 250bucks will get you the 50 1.4.
Get someone to assist you and get a reflector (at least a 42") to light up the subject and start shooting.
