Hey guys, quick question. I'm really short on money right now and I don't have a DSLR. I own a Nikon Coolpix P500, but it doesn't fit me best. I want to sell it, and add some more money to buy a Nikon D3000. Do you think it's decent? Will it do me good? It's the cheapest one I could find right now and from what I saw, it looked good. The sample images were great, and technically it's pretty good. I don't need anything 'wow', just something to at least pleasure my eye. Anyone ever used one of those? Would really appreciate your comments. Also, if you know any similar cheap camera, feel free to tell me. Thanks!

I can't reccomend you any tipe of cheap DSLR camera..But the Canon EOS DSLR's are awesome! The only tipe of Nikon cameras i was able to get my hand on is the Nikon D700,and it's a pretty decend DSLR...If your interested in Handycams,I can really asure you that the Sony HDR CX-150 is one of the best ,but yet cheap cameras out there.Hope I helped at least a bit :)

The D700 is way too expensive, well at least for me. For compact digital cameras, the P500 is one of the best as well, very amazing camera, but like I said, I'm in need of a DSLR. Not because I'm planning on buying a lot of lenses or something like that, but the detail itself is much better in DSLR cameras. But then again, I just recently got the P500 and I can't 'find' good settings for it since I'm new to cameras and photography. Does anyone maybe have some advice on setting up my P500? I googled a bit around that, but couldn't find exactly what I needed.

There is really not a lot a D3000 is going to give you in terms of an upgrade from what you have since you aren't planning on getting good glass. I may be wrong but I think most people will tell you to learn how to use what you already have before thinking about an upgrade. At the point you are at it's not a camera issue that is keeping you from the quality you want - it's a you issue.

What infinite_Day said is so true.

Many look to upgrading their gear as a means of improving image quality, when the least expensive, fastest solution is upgrading the knowledge and skill of the photographer.

Whatever photographic mistakes you make now, you will likley still be making when using a Nikon D3000.

Hmm, you guys are probably right. Because when I tried to technically compare my P500 with a lot of DSLR's, mine was either winning or a tie. I'm gonna keep this one for a bit longer and try to learn all the technical stuff since I don't understand some of it. Thanks a lot for the replies guys!
