quick help for a projet tonight in light painting

Tonight i wissh to light paint my car... but i tried this afternoon in a closet with a shoe and i came out overly saturated due to the long exposure ... is that normal and how to avoid

the image posted has been de saturated using the gamet warning in Photoshop.
