I've been thinking about starting to shoot raw+JPEG so I can keep the raw files I need, but just the jpegs of everything else.

My camera gives me the option of raw+JPEG or Raw+tiff but I guess I don't really understand the difference.

Anyone willing to enlighten me?

I keep the RAW (TIFF)for my good work and trash the rest when I'm done. (I always keep my memory cards with JPEGS and RAW files as shot.)

RAW lets you work a file to the fullest. I shoot lots of night photos. Night shooting is hard and I need all the help I can get with the PP. If these were JPEG's I will have have lost of some the nuances and density that RAW has.

Now, if your a snapshot shooter that does little PP...then it does not matter. But for me it is RAW+. I like the JPEG's so I can sort easy on the computer.

That is just categorically wrong.

there are literally dozens, and dozens of technical articles explaining this. No, I will not...do your own search. ;)

So all my NEFs should be the same size? Nope, they're not.

First off your NEF is not a true RAW file, it is a proprietary modified RAW file. A TRUE RAW file which I am speaking of is a file that contains a (usually) 12-14 bit data string fro EACH of the cameras sensor pixels plus a small data packet containing the exif info etc. This yields the same size each time because the number of pixels is constant. So if you are going to argue highly technical issues, do everyone the courtesy of at least understanding the basics. Thank you.

Well then, according to most definitions, your 'raw data' isn't a file yet until it's saved on the memory card. Until then, it's just 'data'.

Or is this too much of an understanding of something so basic?

No matter what file format your shooting in, the file sizes will always be different. A B&W picture and a color picture of the same thing will be different sizes and different scenes in color will be of a different size. Size of the file will be based on how much data is being captured. Different colors take more space. Take a picture of a not so colorful scene and another one that has lots of color and you will see what I'm trying to say.
