Rebe Xt custom white balance...

For anyone who has a rebel xt and uses custom white balance, how do you set it. *Trying not to sound like a huge idiot here*

I read the manual and did what it said to do but I am not doing something right. I have tried over and over again. I took the picture of grass (for infrared) and when it should be asking which photo I want to use as the custom balance, it doesn't, the custom symbol just goes on the screen and that is it. I even tried to delete all custom settings in case it was doing it b/c there was already set. What can I do? Is there another way to do this? Thanks
