Recomendations for a studio flash

Hi there.
me and my friend plan to get a studio flash..
but dont know that model or type that we should looking for..
basically for portraiture.. and portable.. to take photo at outdoor..
he told me to get something like "300ws" complete with umbrella/softbox.. etc. and what else we need. under $600.

Check out alienbees.com. They've been serving me reliably for years. You can get by with one and a reflector but lighting technique is beyond the scope of this message. The B400's are fine for individuals and families in-studio. Size of softboxes and umbrellas are up to you and what you need.

Most studio flashes are AC powered. If you want to take them outside, you will need a battery/AC system like the vagabond system at alienbees.
