Welcome to the forum.
There are many wildlife photographers here, so just ask.
Getting a photo of the bird with it's prey is always a good shot ... but the up shot with the angle of the birds head is not a great combo.
Keep shooting.
It happened really fast. I was walking, saw it swoop down in front of me to the ground, I pulled my camera up, and by that time it had flown almost directly above me to that branch. I'd have liked a better angle, but those suckers are quick.
They are one of my favorite birds - so colorful and their antics are fun to watch! They also have a funny little squawk, which isn't as pretty as they are.
But I agree with Dennis - the more comfortable you get with these kinds of wildlife captures, the more you'll want to find different perspectives (viewpoints). Those are the ones that make you feel you could reach out and touch the bird and will be the most rewarding to you, too! Keep getting out there, you obviously live in an area with many opportunities!
