Looking out the window we watched a red squirrel gathering dry grass until it's mouth was stuffed. It then ran off under the car & we did not see where it went. About 30seconds later it reappeared & started gathering more grass so I went outside to see where it was taking it. Again it ran under the car but now I could see it did not come out the other side.

I lifted the hood:

Good thing you saw him, my buddy lives in the country, and for a while rabbits were chewing up the wires and hoses under his cars.

awwww! Silly critters. :heartpump: Probably thinks it's a fine place for a nest - out of the weather and snug.

Now she'll have to start all over again. Not safe at all!

Unless you can lay something along the bottom to keep her out, you may have to move the car someplace until she figures it out and gives up. Critters can be very insistent when they've made such a momentous decision.

Good catch, watch out for eaten wires. As a mechanic for 20 yrs, now Professor of Auto, I have seen quite a few critters cooked on the exhaust manifold, mostly on snowbird vehicles.

Wow, fire hazard there.

Lil' bastid!

Had this happen a couple years ago & I took a nest full of babies to town & back before I discovered the nest in the same location as this pic.

We have had mice nest in the air filter sections for the engine & cabin on different vehicles. When in/on the cabin filter you first clue is the damn stink in the cabin.

Mice & squirrels have removed most of the engine compartment insulation on both our vehicles.

Yes, we live in the country.

Have you seen the videos on YouTube called Vise Grip Garage? A person in your field might really enjoy them. One of the best episodes is the 1970 Cadillac DeVille video, which is the first one I saw.He takes an old 70 DeVille which has been parked in a farm field for about 20 years and gets it running , and drives it home some 30 Miles. At speeds up to 80 mph! He often talks about mice nests, mouse damage, etc..

I usually steer clear of reality TV. Pun not intended. If I do see something it's Roadkill, even that is fake. I will check it out, thanks for the info. =]

Edit* Not so much fake but they have a huge crew that does not get camera time, if you know what I mean. =]
