I just commented on the color version before I saw this. I do prefer it in B&W, but I'd like it more if it faded to near-black on the left like the color shot, and also if the mid-tones were a little darker.

I agree, after working on the color one, I liked the gradient layer on the left. it was just too late to go back and work it on this one. Today.

Edit: Here it is with a few tweaks.
