I noticed how debris caught in melting icepack looked a like fossils. I like the transient nature of this subject, and how it was revealed only as the ice melted. By the following weak, there was no ice left on the river bank. Comments appreciated :)

The first one is pretty good! The second seems to me to be lacking. It lacks the tonal variation, and the horizontal composition ain't working for me.

The first one's nice, though. Very simple and clean, nice variation in tone. I like the dirty snow at the bottom of the frame, giving it some weight there, and the two similar but not identical shapes in a fortuitous arrangement.

Yeah, first one for the reasons stated. I'd probably try to even out the lighting a bit by darkening the light patches near the top. Some might find this an important part of the composition, but that's my take on it.
