The DOF indicator ring on old MF lenses appears to be a very convenient contrivance. But I don't see anything equivalent to the DOF indicator ring in my GF1. Although GF1 is a micro four thirds, not a DSLR, I assume DOF indicator mechanism doesn't exist inDSLRs either.

So, why haven't the manufacturers built some kind of DOF indicator into digital SLR cameras?

Snap photo. Look at image just made on camera's LCD. See depth of field effects as rendered by lens. In almost real-time.

The, "DOF indicator mechanism," you speak of--by that do you mean the mechanism, the depth of field preview mechanism? or the depth of field scale found on many older lenses, and still found on many higher-end prime lenses? The lens-based DOF scales vary from lens to lens, and are not really associated with cameras ad much as with lenses.
