Rim shots and darkness with a coke can

[Bend The Light]

Been down to the studio again with my two partners in crime. We are working on the lighting...sometimes trying to get the basics, and sometimes playing with the light to see what we get.
This time, with Rim Lighting in mind, we took a few shots, to try to short light a portrait, and include a rim light to stop the head blending with the background.

and then we got silly with a coke can...

On the color portrait, it seems like the light was too parallel to the face. One of his eyes is in shadow, but the shadow is not deep enough to convey one-light chiaroscuro portraiture, and in the b&w photo it barely get there.

If one side of the face is going to be completely in shadow, I feel that rim lighting kind of upsets the balance of values. It's just not appealing to me, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, the black and white version works the best.

I like the coke can photo, but it seems a bit blue. If that was purposeful then disregard this statement lol.

Thanks. The idea was to get short lighting, so having the best part of the face in shadow was the intention, however, we did want to keep some detail in there. The rim light was another learning thing...we wanted separation from the background. I do agree that the B/W works better, however, but we were pleased with the light.

The coke can picture is blue, deliberately. The original was a reddish orange light. I wanted to portray a coldness (if that doesn't sound too pretentious! )

It is there, honest. But I am not happy with it, either. i think a kind of spot light on the can, bringing out the silver, would make it better.

Very nice shots. I like the one in which the light touches the nose quite harshly but still fits nicely into the entire frame.
The spot light idea should work!
