Rocks and Water

This is a vertical view of some rocks and water along a river; this shows the limits of digital photography's abilities to handle bright highlights. Perhaps in analogue photography we could have more control over the development (at least in black and white) of the details, but in digital, you're stuck with washed-out highlights with a lot of contrast in the scene.

I agree that its hard to shoot that kind of thing with the lighting given. I"m not sure it it would have been worth the effort, but could have you taken two shots, one exposed for the background/water and one for the rocks and then overlayed them in photoshop? I am not sure if that would work as I am just starting to find my ways in PS.
