Why is it "Rule of thirds" and not "Rule of Fourths"... they're just trend setting. Rule-of-Fourths will be the next craze.

check the menu and find the option to change the ratio to which ever you wish.

Looking at the D5100 user's manual, it doesn't look like your D5100 has an option to change the spacing of the grid lines.

Just use the focus point layout in the viewfinder as your ROT guide.

Yeah, I looked in the manual and I couldn't find anything. Oh well...Thanks for the tip on using the focus points.

The grid is not for rule of thirds...it's for assisting the photographer in properly aligning the camera with subject matter. Here's a look at some traditional Nikon focusing screen styles, many going back to the 1960's...when using wide-angle lenses, the grid lines are handy for FAST alignment of the camera...same with copy work. Nikon expects the user to understand how to compose.
