Hey, I just bought a SB-50DX on eBay, despite everyone saying how it can only fire full power manual on modern DSLRs, simply for the fact that it was super cheap. I picked it up for around $30 and 10 batteries for around $20.
Anyways, I've read that this flash can't do TTL metering with newer DSLRs and can only work in manual mode, which you cannot change the power.
I've also read that if you fire it wirelessly as a slave, you can change the power through there.
Most of the stuff online is really vague. I'm still waiting for the flash to come in and I want to know how to use it/what to buy in that time.
How do I fire it wirelessly? Can I just use the D7k's pop up flash? And is there any way for me to tone it down so it doesn't fire at full power every time?

Check the commander mode settings on your D7000. You can either disable the onboard flash or use it at the same time. Even when disabled, the onboard flash still fire to trigger the remote flashes, but it won't affect the exposure.
