In the market for my first flash. I shoot landscapes and really have no flash experience.

What will be some limiting features if I go with a SB600 versus a SB 700?

You can't run the SB600 in command mode (ie, it cannot trigger other flashes, which is better than cactus triggers because command mode uses CLS). I have 3 SB-600's and three cactus triggers, so I have to manually set up all my flash powers instead of using TTL.

Does that matter that the camera has the wireless commander?

The SB-600 also doesn't have:
  • a PC cable port
  • a connector for an external battery pack
  • an optical slave mode (which Nikon calls SU-4 mode).
The SB-600 also cannot zoom beyond 85 mm, while the SB-900 can zoom to 200 mm.

I shoot Nikon, but I no longer own any Nikon Speedlights. For the price of one SB-600, I can buy 3 of these Vivitar 285HV Auto Professional Flash and a set of iSHOOT, PT-04 C Wireless Remote Radio Flash Trigger, with 3 receivers.

Of course with those flash units, and radio triggering I can't do iTTL flash. But, iTTL flash is more complex to learn and use, while it delivers more inconsistant results than controlling flash manually.
