Hello,

I am just starting out and am looking for a good flash that won't break the bank. I have a Nikon D90 and was wondering about the SB-600?? Does anyone use this flash and would you recommend it?

Thanks

Have two, and recommend them very much.
The Sb-400 is a waste of money, and the Sb-700 is also great, but a Used Sb-600 is a fabulous deal.

I have a D90 and just got a SB 600 and I have to say its awesome. I hesitated spending 200$+ for a flash as I though the camera flash was adequate, however I was waaaay wrong. I've missed out on a lot of shots due to not having a proper flash and never knew it until I got mine.

SB600 compliments the camera very well and I find it fairly easy to work with, not to mention you can use it as a off camera flash as the D90 is smart enough to trigger and SB 600 can be used as a off camera slave.
Since I've started to use the SB 600 I haven't had a single picture with red eyes, which happens to be a big pet peeve of mine.

Unless you do full time pro photography, I really dont see the need for a SB 800 or SB 900 although they are nicer :) and also pricier. Again I dont see the point in spending the extra cash unless the $ is in abundance and love toys.

Here is a biased review of SB600.

I have 1x SB600 and 3x SB800. I prefer the 800, but the 600 is good.

Ginu, didn't you say....

... and then follow that up with.....

Have you used any flash more advanced other than the SB600? You might be surprised.

Well b4 investing in a flash, i borrowed a SB600 and SB800 of my friend and that's when I realized the flash is a well worth the 200-300$ upgrade from the on camera flash. Obviously there are differences, upgrades and also not to forget the accessories, but for the 150$ difference I would rather get a 50mm f1.8 prime which is what I did. The whole excitement of upgrading was below 300$ including tax (200$ for flash and 80$ for the 1.8) meanwhile a SB800 would have taken my pocked down by 449 +12% tax in BC :grumpy:

As I said if money doesn't matter then its a no trainer get a SB700(350$), (SB800(450)$ or SB900 (500$), although I recall the OP asking for a good flash which will not break the bank ;)

Here is a review comparing the SB600 and SB800

How do you figure the sb400 is a waste of money?

Where did you get the 50mm 1.8 for $80 Ginu?

On Craigslist I got the 50mm 1.8 AF for 90$ (came with hood and filter but made a tiny creak which I did not like); then I kept watching Craigslist and someone put a brand new 50mm 1.8D with the box for 100$ and ended up buying that for 90$ as well. The 50mm 1.8D was brand new as the guy had a D3100 and rarely used it as it doesn't auto focus on it.

After playing with both I decided to sell the 50mm 1.8 AF since I didn't like the loud creak letting it go without the hood and filter and got 100$ for it.
In the end I ended up with a 50mm 1.8D + Sigma UV filter and the screw on collapsible hood for 80$. :D

Craig's can have some pretty wicked deals if you keep watching, not to mention you can always offer what you can afford or think its fair.
Just yesterday I missed out on a mint 70-210 AFD for 50$... just got there 5 min too late. I didn't really need it but I think any lens under 100$ is a good buy, not to mention more toys.

Two weeks ago I got a 28-80 AF-D (used but no signs of wear on the optics)for 25$ and a 70-300 AF (no sign of wear whats so ever; looks and feels brand new)for 100$. Both lens came with all the original paperwork/boxes/caps and so on.
Guy wanted 175$ for both, but we ended up knowing the same people so he took my offer 125$ for both as he moved to Canon long ago and the lens were just sitting on his shelf collecting dust.

Sorry for the lengthy response, but I just want to give you an insight on what you can find if you keep looking ;)

Yeah, waste of money is a little harsh. The SB400 has its uses.

I highly recommend a SB-600 or above.
