Self Doubt

Hi all. I'm a lurker for the most part but I have been really down lately. I am told that everyone loves my work but i am suffering from a lot of self doubt. I'm wondering if anyone else is also suffering from this or has in the past.

Doubt all you want... 24 hours a day 7 days a week if it matches your temperament. Then... Remember that doubt only matters to people who intend to give up so get to work. Confidence isn't a lack of doubt... It's the view that there are things more important than doubt.

I tend to put more emphasis if I like my work vs others liking my work ... but it is nice when another eye gives you a thumbs up.
I always doubt my work (I mean that seriously), keeps me wanting to do better the next shot.

I'm pretty proud of my own work. I've only been doing this for about 3 years. I have been pretty bummed on the lack of interaction on Facebook groups of my peers. There is some stuff that is blatantly terrible and gets more kudos than my work. I think I need to stop putting any stock into those groups.

I've always loved getting out with my camera, long before I ever thought of doing anything particular with photography. If you don't really love it maybe it's not for you.

I also can drive myself nuts being picky over photos; I have to make myself put it down and leave it alone! then usually the next day I take one look and see what needs to be corrected/adjusted or which looks best, etc.

Seems like 'everyone' if it's online, like 'everything' that crosses their screen! lol or only like what's a novelty or whatever - popular isn't necessarily quality. So try getting some feedback from people whose opinions you value.

edit - OK, well, social media... what gets posted can be more of a passing fancy, a novelty to people who see it - even before the internet we've had lots of 'fads' that don't last all that long, people like something for awhile then are over it. Not probably the best way to get appropriate, effective feedback.

I've been shooting for the past 15 years and I still panic about what I'm doing before a shoot. Self doubt is all part of being an artist. Use it to drive you to improve.

You know, 3 years isn't all that long really. Cutting back on it with social media might be a thought. Have you ever taken a class or workshop? that's how I've gotten some of the best realistic feedback.

I'd get a certain nervous excitement when I did sports/events, but I didn't have any doubt I could do it. Probably takes experience to get to that point. The better you get at it the more you'll probably develop self confidence with it.

I have taken every class they offer at my local community college. I also subscribe to Linda.com and sue Bryce. I absolutely love what I do but people aren't breaking down my doors to shoot. Although I never had a model turn me down for a trade shoot

It doesn't work that way. You have to go out there and meet people. There are a thousand other good photographers out there. People hire you because your work speaks to them. They work with you because they like you as a person too.

I'm not entirely sure why you got that message. You can also try linking the photos from instagram. There's a test forum (Test Forum) where you can try out uploading or linking photos to see how they are displayed on the forum. If you continue to have problems, let an admin know. If you go to the Members page, there should be a list of staff members. @terri is the admin that's around the most these days.

When you have that sorted out, then please go ahead and post some of your work in one of the Photo Galleries (Photography Forum). You'll see there are different categories so you can choose one to post in depending on the subject matter of the image you want to share for C&C (comments and critique). The folks here give honest and useful feedback.
