Whatcha think? It was alot of fun to try and set it up and take it all by myself. Alot of running back and forth. The setup was the camera was about waist high, nifty fifty, about 5 feet in front of me, and there was an off camera sb600 bounced off an umbrella to my right (left side of the lathe if looking at the picture).

Couldn't really be able to see it any other way, now could we? It's comon terminology to refer to such things as 'camera left'. That way we're all on the same page. FYI.

About your SP. The lighting is good. You have a good loop light pattern and nice light fall off. Detail on the shadow side of your face is quite nice. An additional low key light hitting the right side background (the abyss) would've been an improvement

Nicely done.

Thank you very much. I do not have another off camera flash yet, but that will be on my mind when i retake this one day down the road. Thanks for your honest and useful critique.

I agree with Kundalini, having a light illuminating some of the background behind your head would really give some feeling of environment in addition to separating your shadow side from the void. You're already hinting at environment with some background detail to the left, but it's not enough to let us know your setting, but it's enough to make it an environmental portrait without the environment... which is somewhat frustrating to me.

I wouldn't have cropped off any of the lathe. Also, it seems a bit soft, did you add sharpening?

I would also like to see what you are holding as it is hidden behind the wood you are working on.

The light that you do have looks natural and soft. It's definitely worthy of a reshoot imo (that's a compliment just to be clear).

Thank you for your compliment, and i plan on reshooting it when i get my second sb600. The reason that the right side is dark is because it is an ugly silver-reflective insulation panel, so i darkened it in lr3 so it didnt stand out. And i cropped out the lathe cause it looked to busy with a full lathe shot. There was almost too much going on, and it took away from the main subject, me. And it seems soft because this was shot at a wide aperture, to effectively blur the background. So my face is in focus, but not too much in front of and behind that plane is.

any other ideas?

I think it's a great shot. Well thought out, and nicely done. By the way, what type of pen is that going to be?

It's going to be a statesman pen. A woodworker gave me some wood from the USS Constitution, and he asked me to make him a pen. Tommy mac? Know about him? Very nice guy.

I'll try and take a picture of the final result.

And thanks for the kind words!

Looks good. Maybe a straight black backdrop would give you better separation between you and the background. I think it would look great with just you and your work.

Also, a piece of white foam board or poster paper could be used as a reflector to kick in on the right side of your face. You do not need, or want, a bunch of light over there. Just a slight kick.

Nice shot. I wanna see the pen for sure.

I didn't think about using a reflector! And i framed it so i could have the wood in the background, as to add some 'environment' to the shot. I will have to reshoot it and try using a reflector. Thanks for the idea!

The pen has been oiled twice, and is soon to be waxed up and polished--will upload a picture of it probably later tonight.
