First of all, hi everybody. My name is Yannick and I am from Vancouver.

This forum has been a great source of information for me, thank you.

I am buying a D7000 and I was wondering, which lens combination would be the best to begin with. My budget would be around $1800-$2000 for the camera + lens.

My main usage is going to be travel picture, landscape and portrait. There is the "combo" I came up with by searching all over the internet takng in consideration my budget;

35mm f1.8g + 70-300mm f4.5 VR II

18-55mm f3.5 VR + 70-300mm f4.5 VR II

16-85mm f3.5 VR II and later add a 70-300 f4.5 VR II

If you have any different combo, please let me know.

Thanks

Yan

grab a 50mm 1.8 there cheap and a great little lens, good for portraits

you will want something wider for landscapes, 18-55 or a 14-24, look into the sigma 10-20 for v

I would get either 50 1.8 or 351.8 along with a 10-24. I use wide over tele a lot so I would get this set but out of the ones u have mentioned I would go with 35 and 70-300. U can pick up a used 18-55 for about a $100

Id buy a tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

If u really want a telephoto look for an older nikon 70-300mm af ed, they only go for around $90 on ebay. Then trade it in when u can afford a 2.8 telephoto.

Another telephoto option for the d7000 is a classic nikon 300mm f4.5 ed ais manual focus prime lens--amazing iq (better then any of the nikon zooms) in a very well built/portable package. I once compared this lens to a modern 300mm f2.8 prime, a very expensive lens, and the performance at f4.5 and above was on par!

Why not a 18-105 with the 85 1.8?

Or 16-85 with the 85 1.8 for portraits ... you get 16 for landscapes ...

Or 16-85, 70-300 & 85 if the longer focal lengths are a decent part of how you shoot ...

Thanks to everybody. I bought my D7000 this afternoon and got myself a 16-85mm f3.5.

I also ordered a 35mm f1.8G from B&H. Next will be a telephoto, either the 70-300mm or 55-300mm. Any preference?
