Don't be a snob. The kid has potential, and I am sure he'll get there if he can just manage to listen to criticism. It's not like 22 year old guys are exactly known for their humility.

The major issue i see is your attitude itself. You obviously posted these for criticism. Well take it, learn and grow. If you don't like it or disagree, defend yourself. If you still don't agree, drop it. I like the shots, to me they look overly staged and I somewhat miss the idea behind it. Im 20 years old, yet this isn't how I imagine the drug abuse, but hey, what do I know. Just rebound, shoot and learn. Don't get so worked up...

it's kind of hard to explain. Camp is a sort of overdone quality to things. Like 1960's sexploitation, 70's porn, The Darkness, Kiss, all glam rock, vampire movies (including twilight), Rocky Horror Picture Show. I dunno, camp. You knwo it when you see it.

Well, if it wasn't intentional, then it's just cheesy. If it was meant to be cheesy, and/or is cheesy to the extreme, then it's campy. My interpretation...

hey man, listen. I can understand why you were offended by my comments. Please know that I was commenting on these images, not society as a whole. Also understand that I was really unsure what you were going for. Because they read so campy, i kind of expected a 1970s porn quality about them. I felt it was distracting being that everyone was so "clean"; this makes this set look fake to me, yet still trying to be realistic.

Of course I know that drug use isn't always stereotypical, though being camp I felt that the subject wasn't being "overdone" enough. When I say "camp" I don't mean this as an insult, I think it's a perfectly legitimate genre.

I know I can be very harsh in my critiques. I am not interested so much in the technical elements - and frankly, I think the cheapo lighting approach was a good start for these images - again, the 1970's porn thing - but I would encourage you to consider what you want to be communicating, if what you are communicating is worth communicating and how best to execute this before starting. dig it?

I dig it, the lighting was intentional.

Like I said earlier, it was just a practice shoot.

There are many things that I have to get better at, lighting being one of them.

some of these newbies get an ounce of success and think they've got a masterpiece!

The images was somewhat underexposed, but I am going to guess its already been mentioned

Otherwise, I find there is a lot going on in the background, as well as strong spots of color at odd placed. (like the red ribbon on her arm)

In my opinion these could work better in black and white since a little more contrast and texture could add some "grit" to the images, which I think would be beneficial when you want to convey this lifestyle. It would also remove all the distracting colors and give the images a more photojournalistic feel.

I went over the top just to illustrate my train of thought.

All of this. I wanted to know what people thought of the set, I got all the answers I knew I would.

I've been doing this for a year, maybe a little more. I think I've progressed leaps and bounds from where I started and I'm not done learning yet. I don't know everything, nor do I think I do.

Exactly. Campy can be a lot of fun, even kind of cool - but it has to be taken all the way and everything must be blown WAY out of proportion in order for it to work. If it's done half-way then it comes across as just cheap.
