Sharpness Competition

Say I'm using a focal length of 55mm exactly to shoot a given subject. Which lens will give me the sharpest (best) result, the 18-55mm Nikon kit lens, or the 55-200mm VR? (assuming everything else is constant.)

Oooooh, that's a tuffy....I would probably say the 18-55, only because it has less of a range to start with. I have the 18-200 VR and there is a noticeable pin cushion effect at 18....I dunno though

Probably the 55-200. I've never tried the VR version of that lens, but my non-VR version that I did have looked great everywhere. The 18-55 kit lens isn't all that hot at 55mm, but with both stopped down to f/8 they'd probably look about the same. Get your camera on a tripod and test it out.
