Shooting on Spec

Any thoughts about shooting pro sports on spec? I am 50/50 with this. Its great exposure and networking connections so I have been told. However, there are a lot of cost that I have to front for this such as time, travel and gear. I am going to give it a shot for a little while and see what happens. If nothing comes of it, then oh well. I hate to do work for free but you do have to start somewhere.
