Just wanted to throw my support behind the Pentax system, too. I taught myself photography on a K1000 (though, who knows? Maybe my photos suck:lmao
I've also used a Canon AE-1 and didn't really care for it. The shutter seemed finnicky to me and I didn't really seem to like the way it handled.
The K1000 is my day-to-day workhorse still, but I've added a Leica IIIc and a Bronica ETRS to the line-up. The K1000 will remain the staple of my film diet, though.
