It sounds like what you are trying to achieve you are feeling limited by the D5000. So I would personally upgrade to the D90 now, and then work on your lens collection for a while.
If you find this hobby continues to grow and branch out into taking pictures for others and maybe even some income on the side, justifying an upgrade to a more professional camera will be easier down the road. You may even find ways to help fund it you never thought of before. You may even discover the D90 has all you need for a long time and no need to upgrade until the answer of funding that upgrade path answers itself down the road.
If you are feeling constrained and limited I would move on the D90, just my opinion of course, but it may help you greatly at this growing stage in your hobby. Waiting it out you may find yourself disappointed and regretful.
Also, with the D90, you can look into some "older" used D lenses as alternatives as your hobby grows, vs. only looking at AF-S models.
