Should I Go Older, But Higher-end?

Hello everyone, I've wanted to get into photography for a while and am finally starting to shop for equipment. Whichever gear I buy will be used; my initial research has pointed me toward the Nikon D90 or the Canon T2i in current/recent models. I've also seen quite a few older, but higher-end bodies on craigslist; mainly Canon 40D/50D/60D, and the EOS-1D (mk I & II).

For a beginner like me, is there any advantage to starting on one of these models if the price is right? I'd like to keep my initial investment (body, a lens or two, etc) under $1200 or so, and I lean towards Canons because my Dad's been shooting them for years and has plenty of lenses and other gear. As for application, I don't have any overriding interest, though I know I want to do outdoor stuff. I go to a lot of football games and car races, so I'd like to have something good for that. I like that the 1D's are full-frame, but I can't say how much I'll actually need that feauture yet.

I've got the Canon EOS 50D and I love it! I do a lot of adding photography, Senior pictures and other side jobs like that, it's also my hobby so I do a lot of experimenting as well. But if you have a bunch of canon equipment already available I would lean towards one of the D's or even the 1D if you can afford it. Lenses an other equipment in the long runs re going to cost you more than your actual camera body so if you have equipment compatible with canon already available, that would be the wiser option. I've had no problems with canon, they have great high quality products that I would recommend to anyone. Hopes this helps, and good luck!
