Shutter speed display

When displaying the shutter speed on a D40, the indicator is somewhat confusing.

The scale reads like this;

5,4,3,2.5,2,1.6,1.3,1 then it goes back up, 1,1.3,1.6,2,2.5,3,4,5, etc.

When I look and see a 2 how am I supposed to know what speed I'm reading? (I've read the manual until my eyes bled, Garbz)

Well it should read 2" for two seconds and simply 2 for half a second.

10" means 10 seconds.
10 means 1/10 of a second.

Basically if it has aquote that means seconds...without a quote is 1 over that number.
Make sense?
