Not yet announced in the English language, but announced nonetheless, it seems Sigma is looking to go toe-to-toe with Tamron’s popular 150-600mm f/5-6.3 by releasing its own slightly more professional grade version.

The Tamron lens has been so well received in large part because it puts surprisingly good image quality at a much more accessible price point than the long Canon and Nikon options. Sigma, by the looks of it, will offer even better image quality, but they haven’t yet revealed the all-important price point. Ignoring that slightly annoying fact, it seems the Sigma will indeed outperform the Tamron if the specs are to be believed. Sigma’s version has 24 elements to Tamron’s 20, and weighs about 2 lbs more for it.

The minimum focusing distance is also a bit shorter, and the lens boasts optimized AF and OS. The lens will be available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts to start, with Sony A-Mount coming later, and though we don’t have an official price, SR says expected price is a rather high $2,000.

Don’t bet the farm on that though. This is just conjecture, but it’s not like Sigma to announce an identical lens (in regards to focal length and aperture) and then make it almost $1,000 more expensive than the competition.

But isnt the sigma 150-500 about 1000? Is that lens going away?

Perhaps. But who would buy the sigma 150-500mm with the tamron 150-600 on the market?

This is incredible news for full-framesters, if true.

Oh nice to see Sigma stepping in, though I'm not surprised they've made some very good long telephoto lenses and I suspect the Tamron has hit them fairly hard with the shift from 500 to 600mm at the long end - esp as once you're at 600mm you're at a really great length for working with birds and other beasties.

Maybe people that can't afford another $1000 to go to Sigma 600 from the Tamrom 600
who would buy the Sigma if the Tamron was $1000 less?

and the market seems about $250+ less in the used market for the 500 than the 600.

But this is neigh to people that seem to have unlimited funds so go for the Sigma, or both.

I wouldn't mind see some price wars on the 600s though .... make everyone a happy camper :)

People that don't need/want a 600 mm lens.
That's why people buy zoom lenses that have maximum focal lengths of 200 mm, 300 mm, and 400 mm too.

Valid point. If i could speak for myself, however: i want a 14-2000mm f0.6. Lets make that happen. ;)

It seems strange that it is the same speed as the Tamron but weighs 50% more. Besides the price and the IQ, I love shooting with the Tamron because it is so light..

If Sigma is going for a higher image quality point they might have more complex glass element setups inside and thus the higher weight. It would make sense if they see the popularity of the zoom range, but then decide to let Tamron have one market price point and then them steal another.

Light is a relative term. You must have awfully muscly arms.

But the question was 150-500 vs 150-600, nothing to do with 200mm, 300mm, and 400mm. Not sure I follow.

500mm to 600mm isn't a vast jump; but its noticeable plus a fair few of the 500mm zooms don't fully reach 500mm at most working distances of focusing (remember focal length is measured at infinity). So if Sigma makes their 600mm closer to 600mm at most practical working distances chances are the jump from their other zooms will be even more visible.

Peronally I'll be interested to see how it compares up to their 120-300mm OS with a 2*TC
