It really depends on whether you want/use more wide end or more long end. My preference would be for the Sigma just based on the focal length range, as I find it's generally useful to have more wide on an APS-C body, but I tend to be a bit suspicious of Sigma just because their quality-control seems somewhat suspect.
There is also a Nikkor 24-85 f/3.3~4.5 AF-S G series lens with a 67mm filter thread, and it's reasonably compact. It is discontinued now, yet still available if you look around. As tirediron said, I'd really rather have the wider-angle end of the 17-27mm that the Sigma has when using a D90.
I got a 80-200 AF-S a few weeks ago and got really spoiled. I'm looking for similar image quality and low light capability, but can't spend another $1200. I picked up a 50mm f1.8 that I also really like and the price was great. Any thoughts on prime lenses? The zooms just seem to offer so much, especially for taking shots of the family, holidays etc.
