I have the Sigma 17-70 and the zoom is pretty smooth. If your lens is brand new I would just use it and see if it loosens up. That lens has at least a one year warranty, so you have some time to break it in.

Mine is the same. Smooth as can be, and it's been that way since it was new. It wasn't at all stiff when I got it.

Stiff as in it is even throughout the range or are you finding it's stiff at one end of the zoom or the other?

i got it of e-bay its about a year old it has the (optical stabilizer) aswell as AF its ok going from 17mm to 70mm but really stiff at 70mm to about 50mm then gets easyer from 50mm to 17mm .
